Front loading washing machines

This is the most famous and popular washing machine: in the front loader, the laundry is loaded at the front. The door is always provided with a rubber sleeve for a good, watertight seal. The front loader has a filling weight of 5 to 12 kilograms. Usually, a normal front loading washing machine has the following dimensions: HxWxD: 85 x 60 x 60 cm.

regular washing programs.

  • Washing machines with front loading are quite wide at 60 cm. With little space, you can consider a top-loading washing machine, these are narrower.

In the top loader, the laundry is loaded from the top. The cockpit, drum, and motor also hang or stand in the outer casing. A top-loader is often narrower (45 cm) than a front loader (60 cm). With a top loader, the parts are more compact on top of each other. This device usually has a fill weight of 5 to 7 kilograms.

Handy for people with limited space. A top-loading washing machine is narrower than a normal washing machine. Because you have to bend less, this washing machine is also popular with older people.

Top-loading washing machines don’t fit as much laundry as regular front-loading washing machines.

A washer-dryer is a washing machine with a built-in dryer. A washer dryer combo looks like a washing machine from the outside. However, the interior has been adapted in such a way that the laundry can be washed as well as dried. Related tips buy your best home product with ideas for buying

The main reason for purchasing a washer-dryer combination is space-saving. You only need to purchase one device instead of two. This can also save costs.

The main disadvantage of a washer-dryer combination is that the entire contents of the drum (at full load) cannot be dried after washing. The maximum load capacity for drying is smaller than that for washing. Therefore, always pay attention to the ‘wash load capacity and dry load capacity in the product specifications.

The payload or fill weight

You can usually assume that a washing machine with a 6 kg or 7 kg load capacity is sufficient for a two-person household. For a household of 4 people or more, we recommend purchasing a washing machine with a load capacity of 8 kg, for washing 2 to 4 times a week. If you wash often, a machine for 9 kg or larger offers a solution.

Energy label

You often pay a little more for an extra economical washing machine, but once in use, efficient washing machines are cheaper because they use less power. This can make a significant difference to the electricity bill every year, compared to a less efficient washing machine. Energy consumption is measured in letters A to G, with G being the least efficient. The new energy label has three new classes: A: A+, A++, and A+++ (the most economical).

You will see that often the energy consumption per year is also indicated in kWh. This is based on the average annual consumption of 220 washes per year, with washes that are run partly at 40 and partly at 60 degrees (both with a full and half load).

With regard to the speed, the following applies: the higher the speed, the drier the laundry comes out of the machine. A washing machine with a high spin speed again simplifies the work of the dryer. The number of revolutions varies between 1000 and 1600. If you have access to a dryer or are considering purchasing a dryer in the future, it is better to buy a washing machine with drying results A or B and at least 1200 rpm.

The advantages of an induction motor/brushless motor

All washing machines are equipped with a motor that provides the spin power of the machine. Two drive mechanisms can be distinguished. The first is motor brush drive and the second is direct motor drive (brushless motor).

Where previously all washing machine motors were driven by carbon brushes and a string, we now see more and more brushless motors or induction motors. The advantages of this system are that the motor can function a lot quieter due to the direct drive and that it is less subject to wear. Induction motors are often also more energy-efficient and maintenance-free. For that reason, a supplier often dares to give a 10-year warranty on the motor. The downside: Slightly more expensive to purchase.

Some washing machines have the extra option of ‘half load’. The washing machine weighs the amount of laundry in the drum and adjusts the program accordingly. If you often run small washes, this is more economical because the program with half load is more energy-efficient.
